In the Salento region, just 5km south of Baroque Lecce, Cavallino, an important Messapian settlement, conserves significant archaeological artefacts from the history of region. Following the discoveries made by Duke Sigismondo Castromediano, a vast territory found to contain traces of the 8th and 6th centuries B.C.E. was made a protected area. This led to the establishment of the Museo diffuso di Cavallino, which extends across the area and is managed in collaboration with the University of Salento.
In the heart of the village, the Baronial-Marquisate Palace dominates the square with its ramparts, bastion and noble façade, once the home of the Castromediano-Lymburg family, masters of Cavallino. The parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption whose bell tower is second only in height to Lecce Cathedral, also looks onto the square. The interesting 17th century Monastery of the Dominican Fathers was built in Renaissance style and is today the ISUFI specialist centre for the University of Salento.
