Gallipoli, known as the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, is a town in the province of Lecce in Apulia, located on the western coast of the Salento area, overlooking the Ionian Sea.
The town, which became a bishop’s seat in the 6th century C.E., is divided into two clearly distinct areas: the old town, which sits on a calcareous island, and the new town, connected to the island by a stone bridge from the 17th century.
The Baroque style spread across the city in the 17th century, clearly reflected today in the many religious and civil buildings, which feature its defining features: exaggerated, extravagant and excessive floral and angel decorations.
Given the importance of its Baroque religious and civil architecture, Gallipoli has been included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, (with other municipalities in the area) as “Salento and the “Barocco Leccese”, and is currently awaiting confirmation of this status.
