Just under 50km from Foggia, Casalnuovo Monterotaro sits on a hilltop at the very northernmost tip of Apulia, overlooking the region of Molise, the valley of the River Fortore and the artificial lake of Occhito.
The graceful historical centre clusters around the 17th century Church of St Mary of the Rock, which conserves a valuable organ dating to 1746. The Chiesa Madre dei Santi Pietro e Nicolò, the Cappella della Madonna della Rocca, the harmonious lines of medieval houses and an 19th century fountain can all be found here.
Heading out of the village into the lush vegetation surrounding it, woods hide the evocative ruins of both the ancient Badia di Monterotaro which probably gave the village its name and the castle, including a cistern and the old square watchtower.
