Faeto is a small town of approximately 700 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, situated in the Southern Dauni Mountains and surrounded by magnificent woods. The Franco-Provençal name for Faeto is Faíte, and comes from the Italian word faggeto, meaning forest of beech trees. To this day, these natural fixtures are the strong points of the area. Magnificent valleys surround the town and, on clear days, it is possible to spot the peaks of the Gargano.
The old town of Faeto is characterised by small roads and narrow alleyways, which lead from the main street to the outskirts of the town and out to the cunnùtte, the famous arches at the entrance to the town. These streets are dotted with ancient private buildings that are particularly notable for the beauty of their gateways.
A defining feature of the area is the Bosco Difesa di Faeto, one of the most significant sites of natural interest in the Dauni Mountains which has been recognised as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). This vast plot of land is home to downy oaks, turkey oaks, beech trees, maple trees, mountain elms, linden trees and mountain ash trees. Flowers include snowdrops, primroses, anemones, wood orchids, and dog rose, the latter found mostly in clearings and at the edges of the forest. The fauna is equally rich and varied, with wolves, badgers, dormice and red and green woodpeckers. The Forest is also home to a Botanical Garden, picnic areas and trails of various lengths and difficulties.
