In the heart of the Murgia dei Trulli, 50km from Bari, a spread of pinnacles announces Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage and recipient of the prestigious Orange Flag awarded by the Touring Club of Italy.
The old town centre is entirely composed of trulli, traditional dry stone huts whitened with quicklime and capped by conical bare-stone roofs. Crosses, pierced hearts, and zodiac signs decorate the roofs, maintaining the air of mystery that surrounds these ancient buildings.
The Rione Monti, a maze of narrow winding streets with over 1,000 trulli, is one of the oldest part of the town, with the Rione Aia Piccola, home to Casa Pezzolla, a complex of 15 interconnected trulli (today the Museo del Territorio), and the Trullo Sovrano, which stages performances and concerts. Even the churches of Alberobello are shaped like trulli. The Church of St. Anthony, laid out on a Greek cross plan, has a 21m tall dome. Another church worth a visit is the Basilica Minore dei Santi Medici, with images of the Madonna of Loreto and patron saints Cosma and Damiano.
