Mompeo (RI) is a village immersed in nature, surrounded by the mountains that rise up on the southern end of the Sabine range. Ruins, water tanks and three tower tombs demonstrate that there were villas and settlements that can be dated to the time of the Roman Empire. The discovery of a mile marker confirms the existence of a Roman road that was hewn out of the rock.
In 1646 Morpeo became the property of Marquis Naro of Rome which sparked an era of great urban renewal when the historical centre was embellished, streets were recreated and an entrance gate to the borgo built. At the bottom of a large steep road about 300m from the gate is the Church of St. Charles which holds works of great artistic value as does the parish Church Nativity of Holy Saint Maria. The first nucleus of the Orsini Castle was built in 877 by a certain Francone with approval from the Abbot of Farfa and transformed into Baronial palace under the Naro family.
