An ancient hamlet of Bagnoregio (VT) located in the Lazio part of the Tuscia region, Civita di Bagnoregio was founded 2500 years ago by the Etruscans and today has about a dozen inhabitants. The writer Bonaventura Tecchi dubbed it the Dying City, a name for which it is famous to this day. The name was inspired by the precarious nature of its existence: the borgo is perched on a hill of tuff and clay that is subject to an unstoppable and continuing process of erosion, accessible only by a reinforced concrete bridge.
A fairy-tale atmosphere pervades inside the borgo where everything, from alleyways to noble residences, private houses to small inns, seems to be exactly as it was in the Middle Ages. The only gate remaining, Porta Santa Maria, provides direct access to the heart of the residential centre, Piazza di San Donato, where the 16th century church of the same name conserves a 16th century Flemish-made wooden crucifix. Alleyways entwine around the piazza leading to little architectural jewels and viewpoints that offer stunning panoramas of the Valle dei Calanchi where erosion has created deep ravines and a lunar landscape in the valley.
