Caprarola (VT) rises on the southern side of the Monti Cimini range, perched on a spur of tuff rock between the consular roads, via Cassia and via Flaminia. Although the surrounding area was full of Etruscan settlements, Caprarola was first inhabited in the 11th century (approx.).
Human settlement and the arrival of the Romans were delayed by the thick and impenetrable forests (the Selva Cimina) that covered Monti Cimini and the legends about the monsters living in them. The Middle Ages instead saw local feudal rulers battle for the area.
Dominated by the imposing bulk of Palazzo Farnese, one of the most fascinating examples of a Renaissance residence in Europe, the urban layout conserves its medieval origins with many narrow, twisting alleyways.
To the west of Caprarola, volcanic Lake Vico is one of the areas of particular natural value in the Lazio Region.
