Arpino is one of the oldest towns in the province of Frosinone. Its altitude in relation to the surrounding valley allows it to enjoy breathtaking views. A fortified town, the acropolis is situated in the Civitavecchia area, at an altitude of 630m. It was a stronghold of the Volsci, Samnites and Romans with its characteristic polygonal or cyclopic walls which feature an original pointed arch gate.
Arpino is famous mostly for its connection with Marcus Tullius Cicero, Arpino’s glorious son born here in 106 BC, who often made melancholy mention of it in his work. The town’s main thoroughfare is named after him, as is the convitto nazionale Tulliano (boarding school), the Tulliano high school and the medieval Tower in the Acropoli which is known as the Tower of Cicero, although it was actually built under the Angevins in the second half of the 13th century.
