Torri in Sabina (RI) rises up on a spur of the Monti Sabini range. Medieval in origin (the earliest documentation of its existence dates to 747 CE), it stands at the heart of a landscape of gently rolling hills and olive groves. The historical and architecturally notable 9th century Church of Santa Maria della Lode a Vescovio, a Romanesque building that stands on the site of the ancient Roman city, Forum Novum, preserves significant 12th century frescoes.
The twin fortresses in the hamlets of Rocchette and Rocchettine, settlements dating to the 13th century, bear witness to ancient military architecture: Rocchette is still a residential centre with a handful of inhabitants today while Rocchettine and its fortress have been abandoned.
