An area settled since ancient times and surrounded by olive trees, chestnuts and beech forests, Sermoneta (LE) rises on a hill in the Monti Lepini range to dominate the Pontine plain. Symbol of the town is the Caetani Castle, built in the 13th century above the residential centre. There is a well-preserved medieval centre with an urban layout of alleys, narrow streets and small squares within enclosing walls. Architectural features include: the Collegiata di Santa Maria, the Church of Giuseppe (also known as the Immaculate Conception), the former-synagogue, the Church of the Annunciation, the Loggia dei Mercanti (former location of the ancient town hall), and the Convent of St. Francis with a holly oak that is over 500 years old. The belvedere offers a panoramic viewpoint over the Pontine plain.
The territory of Sermoneta also includes the Abbey of Valvisciolo, one of the very first examples of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Italy and, also close by, Sulmo, the ancient city of the Volsci cited by Virgil in the Aeneid.
