Located in an excellent panoramic position guarding the valleys below, Valentano (VT) has very ancient origins: archaeological finds from the surrounding area demonstrate that it was most certainly inhabited in the Bronze Age.
The Rocca with the Farnese Castle, built by Pier Luigi Farnese around a manor house in the 1300s, is located in the highest point of the village: over 20m high, it dominates the borgo below and boasts a magnificent façade with an unusual brick portico. Recently restored, it now hosts the Museum of the Prehistory of Tuscia. Historical buildings in the borgo include: the Palazzo del Comune, of Renaissance origin; Porta Magenta, also known as the Porta del Mascherone because of the face carved into the frame that copies a drawing by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola; Palazzo dei Vitozzi whose windows are framed with volcanic rock; and Palazzo Cruciani which was the birthplace of mathematician Paolo Ruffini.
