Situated in the heart of Schnalstal (Val Senales), the Vernagt-Stausee (Lago di Vernago) can be found at an elevation of 1,689 m above sea level and covers an area of about 100 hectares. This manmade reservoir takes its name from the town which was left mostly submerged under the water collected by the dam.
The water goes to the hydroelectric plant in Naturns via a 15-km pressure conduit. With 180 MW and a height difference of over 1,150 m, this is the hydro-power station with the highest output in South Tyrol. During the summer, the reservoir is a popular spot for rowers who come to train in high-altitude locations.
