An imposing Austro-Hungarian fortress, fort Corno was part of the Lardaro barrier (Subrayon III) in the vast Austrian fortification system on the border with Italy. The fort was built between 1890 and 1892 in the style of Vogl and is located in valle del Chiese, in south western Trentino in the municipality of Praso.
The aim of the Lardaro Barrier was to prevent the Italian army advancing into the Tyrol region. The fort watched over Valley Giudicarie from above, in tandem with fort Cariola on the opposite side of the valley. It had a volume of 18,000 cubic metres spread out over six levels, following the profile of the rocky spur where it was built. The imposing structure comprised 54 rooms which housed approximately 150 soldiers.
The fort was abandoned after the war and stripped of iron and metal; it was acquired by the Municipality in 1997 who began reclamation work. Today, fully restructured and conserved, it provides a multimedia visitor route and a panoramic path linking fort Corno to fort Larino.
