Fort Sommo Alto was positioned to control Coe pass and the plateau of Malga Melegna.
Smaller than fort Serrada, it was a mid-sized work intended for surveillance of the territory between fort Cherle and fort Serrada. It comprised three blocks: the bunker had two armoured revolving domes for 10 cm howitzers, a revolving domed watchtower and a fixed dome for two machine guns to defend the moatless gully; the other two blocks, linked to the first by underground tunnels, were used for close combat and armed with machine guns in fixed domes and armoured casemates. It did not see heavy bombing during the war remaining mostly intact to the end of the conflict.
