Fort Tenna is an Austro-Hungarian military construction on the hill between lakes Caldonazzo and Levico, near the town of Tenna (Trento). It is part of the "Tenna Barrage - Subrayon III" in the huge system of Austrian fortifications on the Italian border. It dominates Valsugana and the lakes below from an altitude of 608 metres.
The fortified structure had a twin structure, fort Col de le Bene on San Biagio hill. Together they closed off Alta Valsugana (Valsuganasperre) and Valsorda in a characteristic pincer formation, protecting the Fortress of Trento from enemy approach. It also monitored the Monterovere road leading to the fortifications of Lavarone and Vezzena, and the Caldonazzo plain below.
The quadrangular fort was built between 1880 and 1882 with metamorphic rock from a nearby quarry. The two-storey ashlar structure has service rooms on the ground floor, with dormitories and artillery above. The roof is a terrace of approximately 400 m2 whose flooring protected the rooms below from damp and allowed for the collection of rainwater. The North-facing façade is unusual with its five elliptical semi-columns, approximately 7 metres high, which acted as buttresses to support the weight of the structure.
