Piazza San Carlo is one of the most important squares in the historical centre of Turin. Often nicknamed the “drawing room” by Turin residents, it stands on the thoroughfare of via Roma which links it to Piazza Castello and Piazza Carlo Felice.
In the centre, is one of the most significant statues of the early 1800s: the equestrian statue of Emanuel Filiberto, represented by Carlo Marocchetti (1838) as he sheathes his sword after the Battle of St. Quintino in 1557.
To the south-west, the shorter side of the square is framed by the almost twin facades of the Churches of St. Christina and St. Charles which are not truly ‘twins’ but copied from each other in turn through time.
The historical Caffè San Carlo (inaugurated in 1842), Caffè Torino and Fratelli Stratta bakers (with original interiors from 1836) can all be found in the square.
Today the square is open to pedestrians only, a single-level parking area can be found beneath it.
