Named after the typographer and engraver Gian Battista Bodoni, born in Saluzzo in 1740, Turin’s Piazza Bodoni was opened in 1835.
Providing a background is the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, building by architect Giovanni Ricci. In the centre of the square is an equestrian statue of Alfonso Lamarmora, General in the Savoyard army and minister of the Kingdom of Italy. Across from the Conservatorio is a plaque commemorating Giuseppe Pomba, founder of the publishing house and typographer Utet, placed in 1883. A small portion of the square has porticoes which frame the end of via Pomba. Since 1998 there has been a three-storey underground car park beneath the square which can accommodate almost 500 cars.
