With a surface area of over 38,000m2, piazza Vittorio Veneto is the largest square in Turin. Located at the end of via Po, in the historical centre of the city and adjacent to the River Po, it leads to the bridge named for Vittorio Emanuele I which links it to piazza Gran Madre di Dio.
It was created in the early 1800s as part of the project to expand the city towards the River Po, a natural boundary, designed by architect Giuseppe Frizzi who ensured that it would fit with the pre-existing buildings. First named for Victor Emanuel I, its name was changed after WWI to celebrate the victory of Vittorio Veneto. The slight incline of its surface made it particularly adapted to the military parades held there under both the Savoy kings and Fascist dictatorship.
With numerous outside seating areas, Imperial-style street lamps with cornucopia arms and surrounded by porticoes, the square is today a meeting place and the setting for some key events in the city calendar such as the “fuochi di San Giovanni”, celebrations for the patron saint of Turin.
