The Cortile del Maglio in the Borgo Dora neighbourhood of Turin is part of the large architectural complex that was once the Military Arsenal.
An explosives factory and refinery towards the end of the 1500s, it was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century when it passed to the Savoy family. Following an explosion in 1852, it was almost completely demolished, along with several residences in the borgo. Victor Emmanuel II then transferred the Royal Explosives Factory out of the residential centre and the factory in Borgo Dora became the Royal Arsenal of Turin, used for the production and repair of artillery and carriage-born weapons, whose building in neomedieval style, with portico and tower, was carried out in 1867 by the Genio Militare (Military Engineers).
Today, the Cortile del Maglio is the headquarters of the Associazione Cortile del Maglio which focusses on the promotion and reclaiming of the Borgo Dora area through social-cultural events and initiatives. The symmetrical main square (40 m2 each side) is bounded by four perimeter roads. The bent metal trees that support its roof recall the ancient Maglio, a machine for forging and hammering metal pieces. Inside are artisanal workshops, shops and caffes. This space also hosts various types of event.
