Piazza CLN in Turin was created when via Roma – the thoroughfare that stretches from the train station of Porta Nuova to Piazza Castello – was rebuilt. Situated ‘behind’ the two Churches, St. Charles and St. Christina (which overlook the adjacent Piazza San Carlo, known as the “drawing room “of Turin), it was long-known locally as the “square of two churches”.
Near the churches and characterising the square are two statues which depict a reclining man and a woman, respectively allegorical representations of the city’s most important rivers, the Po and the Dora. The statues are surrounded by fountain-like basins.
In recent years, the busy square (with porticoes that run along the entire via Roma) was partially closed to traffic. The part open to traffic has many circulation limits so the square is mostly free of cars (there are no parking spaces). Its present name was assigned after WWII to honour the Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale (Committee for National Liberation) of the Partisan era.
