The Villa Medicea di Castello, known as Villa Reale and dating back to the 14th century, is one of the oldest residences of the Medici family and today houses the Accademia della Crusca. It has a rectangular floor plan with large, opulent frescoed salons. The splendid Italian garden, rich in citrus fruits and rare plants, is decorated with Renaissance sculptures, such as the Grotta degli Animali (Cave of the Animals) by Giorgio Vasari. The Villa is on the UNESCO World Heritage List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
