Ancient Casa Cavassa in Saluzzo (CN), whose original building dates to the 14th century, was the official residence of the Cavassa family of Carmagnola until 1775. It has been expanded, modified and, also, left to ruin many times over the centuries. The recovery of the building at the end of the 1800’s was due to Marquis Emanuele Tapparelli d'Azeglio: restoration work revealed the original Medieval and Renaissance features and eliminated all subsequent additions. Elements in Medieval (a wall with merlons) or Renaissance style (a tower with balcony) were also added.
Tapparelli was responsible for the idea of making the building into a museum, intending to restore its original spirit. The building passed to the Municipality of Saluzzo in 1890 in accordance with the marquis’ will. The museum was inaugurated the following year. Through ups and down, the museum was expanded and the building made suitable. Casa Cavassa has been a modern museum since 1990 and one of the most visited monuments in the town, thanks to support from the Piedmont Region and the Cassa di Risparmio di Saluzzo.
