Director Antoine Fuqua had previously announced that the film would shoot in Italy in “seaside villages”: the choice fell on the Amalfi coast which in Autumn 2022 became the principal set of The Equalizer 3, third instalment of the saga produced by Sony Pictures, inspired by the Eighties series of the same title.
Shooting of the final instalment in the action saga starring Denzel Washington as retired DIA agent Robert McCall took place in Atrani, the fictional Altomonte, featuring the small clifftop sanctuary of Santa Maria del Bando perched 700 steps above the square (a symbol of McCall’s recovery) where the director shot interior and exteriors. McCall is enchanted by the landscapes, incredible food and history of this small borgo in Southern Italy, balanced between sea and mountain, and most of all by its inhabitants as, after a lifetime of violence and revenge, kind people – the doctor, bartender, police chief – welcome him, offering him a chance of peace. The bar owned by Aminah (Gaia Scodellaro) was built in the village’s small square. Scenes set in the small borgo include a procession with fireworks and a local celebration on the beach, with stands, kiosks and grilled fish with the lights of the fishermen in the background.
An action scene with a gunfight was shot in Punta del Vento, between Capo d'Orso and Erchie in the municipality of Maiori, whose coastal road provided a backdrop to a night-time motorcycle chase. The crew also went to Minori, where the small square outside the Basilica of Santa Trofimena, via Dietro la Chiesa and via Lama were furnished with vintage signs and light displays for several scenes including a wedding in the square.
The film was also shot in Naples –in piazza del Gesù, near the Montesanto funicular, corso Vittorio Emanuele and in the alleys of the centre including via Sedile di Porto and via Sant'Aspreno – and at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
The Equalizer 3 marks the end of the story: it becomes clear that, even if executing justice to help the oppressed has given Robert McCall some peace, the violence that has characterised his life will never end.
