Firmiano Castle stands on a raised area of porphyritic rock situated at the confluence of the river Adige and the river Isarco. The castle has always played a significant role: it is one of the oldest in the Alto Adige region, and, with its walls that are in places as wide as five metres, it is one of the first examples of defensive architecture in the area.
Renovated between 2001 and 2006, Firmiano Castle now hosts one of the five Messner Mountain Museums. It illustrates the relationship between between man and mountain. The exhibition trail winds its way between the Massiccio dello Sciliar and the Gruppo di Tessa outside, and the art, installations, and exhibits on display inside.
