The Monumental Complex del Broletto, in the centre of Novara, was a courtyard used for trading in the Middle Ages. Four buildings, differing in architectural style, were constructed around it between the 13th and the 18th century, making it a key point in the city.
On the north facing side, is the Palazzo del Comune, also called dell’Arengo from the salone dell’Arengo on the second floor which conserves 15th century frescoes from several churches of the city. The external façade is very simple, with traces of frescoed shields, four double windows and a portico of round arches.
The 13th century Palazzo delle Corporazioni Artigiane also known as Palazzo Paratici stands on the east facing side, commissioned by the powerful trading corporations of the time. On the first floor is the archaeological museumand on the second the town’s collections of art and history.
Palazzo del Podestà to the south, towards piazza Duomo, and Palazzo dei Referendari to the west both date to between the end of the 14th and early 15th centuries. These two buildings are characterised by Gothic elements, heraldic crests and nature-inspired festoons and a portico of pointed arches.
The Broletto complex has been the setting for the Galleria d’arte moderna Paolo e Adele Giannoni since 2011 and also hosts temporary exhibitions.
