Palazzo Carignano in Turin is one of the most important works from the Piedmont Baroque period and was designed by the architect Guarino Guarini who began building work in 1679. The present quadrangular structure is due to a 19th century addition built to accommodate the Italian Parliament. The central, elliptical ballroom, situated in the 17th century wing, was transformed in 1848 into the Chamber for the First Subalpine Parliament.
The building stands on the square of the same name and is part of an architectural design that includes the lateral façade of the Accademia and the back of the Church of San Filippo Neri.
At present, the Palace houses the Princes’ Apartments on the ground floor and the National Museum of the Italian Risorgimento on the raised piano nobile which conserves an extraordinary wealth of heritage, a library, archive and includes two original Parliamentary chambers on the exhibition route.
