The Teatro Civico Milanollo in Savigliano (province of Cuneo) was built on the initiative of a group of residents between 1834 and 1836, as the Latin inscription on the façade recalls: “A company of friends, gathered the money and established in year 1835, this theatre (dedicated) to Melpomene and Thalia, with the intention of adding beauty and happiness to the lives of residents”.
Designed by hometown architect Maurizio Eula, the theatre has an oval layout with an entrance that juts out onto the square. On the façade, statues of Melpomene and Thalia, symbols of tragedy and comedy, are positioned in niches and, on high, Victory crowns music and poetry. The interiors, designed by Gioacchino Brero, have floral decorations in theme with the scenic arts, masks and musical instruments decorate the boxes. The ceiling features a large chandelier and L’Apoteosi di Psiche by Piero Ayres, who also painted Parnassus on the huge curtain in 1845 which, although rarely seen, is well preserved.
The theatre was inaugurated on 14 April 1836 and soon after was named after the Milanollo sisters in 1899, violinists from Savigliano who became famous worldwide. The theatre is extremely active, with a busy theatrical season. It can accommodate 352 visitors, with 33 boxes (4 seats in each), stalls, gallery and loggia.
