The natural waterfall of Isola del Liri (province of Frosinone) is unique in Italy for its location in a historic centre. It is an offshoot of the Liri river which begins on the Sora plain, edges around the Monastery of St. Dominic and splits into two near the travertine rock where the Boncompagni-Viscogliosi Castle is located, enclosing the city below like an island. The left branch feeds the Great waterfall (also known as the Vertical waterfall), with a drop of approx. 27m while the right generates a smaller second cascade, the Valcatoio waterfall. Its waters disappear along a rocky cliff slope for 160m before reaching the lower region. The river was a source of wealth for centuries: with the development of an industrial-based economy, it
brought mechanical and hydroelectric power to the town.
