Lungotevere is the wide road that coasts the river Tiber as it crosses Rome taking water from the Aniene river and later flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Fiumicino. Its building required the demolishment of the buildings that previously stood on the riverbanks whose waters are contained with retaining walls (muraglioni) and, given the elegance of its bridges and the picturesque views of the antiquity and beauty of the city centre they offer, could be considered something of an open-air art gallery.
Lungotevere changes name on its course through the city, according to the neighbourhood. Some of the better known are lungotevere Portuense, which links the Sublicio and Testaccio Bridges; lungotevere Gianicolense, from piazza della Rovere to the Mazzini bridge in Trastevere; lungotevere Vaticano, linking the bridges of Sant’Angelo and Vittorio Emanuele; lungotevere Castello, which leads from piazza di Ponte Sant’Angelo to piazza dei Tribunali in the Borgo and Prati areas; lungotevere Milvio, from the Milvian to Flaminio bridges; riva Ostiense, in Ostiense, near the ponte dell'Industria; and lungotevere San Paolo which reaches the Marconi bridge.
