Madonna di Campiglio is a tourist resort of just over 800 inhabitants located in Val Rendena, between the Brenta Dolomites and the Adamello and Presanella Alps.
The first written references suggest that it was established in 1190, when a certain Raimondo, in expiation for his sins, decided to found a monastery-shelter to assist travellers. The burgeoning establishment was suppressed in 1515. A long period of decline lasted until 1868, when local businessman Giovanni Battista Righi purchased the ruins and founded the "Alpine establishment", the first modern hotel in the town, which ushered in a new life for Campiglio. Righi was succeeded by Franz Josef Oesterreicher who transformed the town into an exclusive destination for the European and Habsburg aristocracy, towards the end of the 19th century. Famous visitors include Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
At 1,550 metres above sea level, Madonna di Campiglio is a winter sport destination for lovers of winter sports, with 150 km of ski facilities, and for tourists attracted by the numerous clubs, award-winning restaurants and cultural activities.
The town is surrounded by a typical mountain landscape dotted with numerous, old-style refuges.
