San Martino di Castrozza (1,487 m a.s.l.) owes its origin to an ancient religious institution, the hospice of Saints Martin and Julian, who welcomed travellers crossing the Rolle pass headed from Primiero to the Val di Fiemme and vice versa.
Only the Church of St. Martin with its Romanesque bell tower remains of the ancient hospice. Travellers arriving here are welcome by the majestic sight of thick woodland and the rocky peaks of the Pale mountains which turn pink at sunset.
The village is inside the Parco Naturale Paneveggio Pale di San Martino, an area of rare beauty, protected for over 30 years. Its simple yet elegant and picturesque appearance has inspired poets and musicians, such as Arthur Schnitzler and Richard Strauss.
