Arco is located north of the Altogarda plain at the end of the valley of the Sarca river which flows from here into lake Garda, in a position protected by the mountains.
The city stretches out along the slopes of a rocky cliff which is the location of a magnificent medieval castle that dominates the entire Altogarda valley. “A natural clinic with clear, healthy and clean air”, declared Albert, Duke of Hapsburg about Arco at the end of the 19th century. Before long, many treatment centres were established which still offer baths, inhalations and heliotherapy today.
The Austrian domination impressed its characteristic style onto the town centre, notable in the parks and gardens, the elegant art nouveau villas and beautiful palaces. An evocative series of carved stone portals defines the old city. The arboretum comprises plants from the 4 continents, set on a path that continues onto the park and a romantic walk through the olives up to the medieval castle. The counts of Arco built the castle on the top of a rocky tower that dominates the entire area, in the centre of the Sarca valley.
