Riva del Garda (Trento) is located in the north-western corner of lake Garda. mount Rocchetta rises steeply to the West (1575 m) and mount Baldo (2,218 m) to the East.
The municipality maintains the characteristic appearance of a 13th century village, with narrow streets and noble buildings. Directly overlooking the lake, the city centre has typically medieval architecture and is bordered by Lombard-Venetian style structures: the fortress, now home to the civic museum and art gallery; the Apponale tower, an ancient place for trade and fairs; Palazzo Pretorio, which houses Roman, medieval and modern tombstones under the loggia; historic Palazzo del Comune; the Church of the Inviolata and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, important examples of Baroque architecture.
Riva del Garda has very ancient origins: inhabited since pre-Roman times (excavations carried out near mount San Martino uncovered a sanctuary), the ancient town of Ripa was part of the municipium of Brescia during the Roman period. It was subsequently dominated by the Goths, Lombards, Franks and, finally, by the Prince Bishop of Trento.
