Riko and Sara’s life unfolds for the most part in Reggio Emilia, where locations include, among others, Piazza San Prospero, Piazza Fontanesi, and the courtyard of Caffè Arti e Mestieri. The former officine reggiane are particularly evocative, where the couple marries with an unusual wedding celebration. Locations in the province include Scandiano, in particular the entrance to “Il Corallo” disco and the Rocca del Boiardo. In an early scene, Riko is drinking a glass of wine in the portico of Novellara, when a colleague on his bicycle hails him and comments on an event that happened in the factory: other recognisable locations here include Bar Roma, the Piazza and the surrounding countryside when he lunches with a colleague and his family. Other locations in the province included Correggio, birthplace of Ligabue (the film’s director) and Gattiatico, where Fuori Orario is located.
A trip to Rome to take part in a labour protest displays the beauties of the eternal city at night: Piazza del Popolo, with the obelisk up close and via del Corso in the background, the Tiber River and Ponte Sant’Angelo where the three friends, their backs to Castel Sant’Angelo, attempt to drive personal electric transporters, ending up on via della Conciliazione, (with a glimpse of Basilica San Pietro) and visiting, through a clever trick, the Imperial fora where Riko contemplates the thousand-year beauty of ancient Rome, Trajan’s Column behind him.
Riko and Sara spend their honeymoon in various places in Italy: Vigevano (PV) offers a sweeping shot over the imposing Piazza Ducale, looking out from the Torre del Bramante Sara’s point of view allows the viewer to admire the city’s Duomo and the couple also walks down the Strada Coperta; in Ascoli Piceno, Sara walks across Piazza del Popolo. Following the journey, difficult times await, almost inducing Riko to an extreme gesture near Pontelagoscuro hamlet of Ferrara. Significantly the epilogue is set outside Italy, in Frankfurt.
