L’ordine del tempo is freely inspired by the novel of the same title by scientist Carlo Rovelli which explores the complexity and mystery of physical and existential time.
On her return to directing at the age of 89, Liliana Cavani has translated into images the feelings experienced by a group of old friends gathered at a seaside villa in Sabaudia to celebrate a birthday, as they do every year. During the party they hear disconcerting news: the world as they know it could end in the next few hours. That summer night, each of them has to make sense of their lives as they face their last moments before the apocalypse. The beach where the villa is located, and setting for many existential discussions, features 16th-century defensive torre Paola, with the Circeo promontory (boundary between the Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo shorelines) in the background.
Scenes were also shot at the Abbey of Fossanova in Priverino (Latina) and the Astronomical Observatory of Rome in Monte Porzio Catone (Rome).
