Tunin, a farmer from Lombardy, lives in a farmhouse in Northern Italy: the marshland in the opening scenes, where an anarchic is killed, is actually Provaglio d’Iseo. Sent to Rome to assassinate Mussolini, he comes into contact with Salomè, a prostitute working out of a brothel in via Baccina in the Monti neighbourhood of Rome. Her clients include a ranking Fascist – Giacinto Spatoletti – whom she hopes will provide information and who accompanies her, Tunin and Tripolina on a day trip to the Agro Pontino countryside, a foursome on a motorbike with sidecar.
Most of the film was shot in Rome and Sabaudia (LT), although the differentiation between the two cities is never mentioned. The motorbike with sidecar crosses the centre of Sabaudia, town built by the Fascist regime in the 1930s, driving past the Church of the Annunciation and the Torre Littoria (today Torre Civica) in Piazza del Comune.
During the night, Spatoletti and Tunin wander the historical centre of Rome, ending up in Piazza del Campidoglio where the Fascist salutes the statue of Marcus Aurelius and settles “between the arms of God Tiber”, the sculpture on the staircase of the Palazzo Senatorio.
The following day the anarchic farmer practises his shooting skills at a kiosk in Piazza di San Pietro in Montorio on the Janiculum Hill outside the church that gives the square its name, although the frame shows the Passeggiata del Gianicolo, several hundred metres distant, behind Tunin in the shot.
A client is taken ill at the brothel. Tunin and Salomè must get rid of the man who is dumped near the Temple of Saturn in the ruins of the Roman Forum. Tunin’s reward for this job is spending two days with his beloved Tripolina during which time they treat themselves to ice-cream in Viale del Belvedere on the Pincio.
