Located in the heart of the Agro Pontino, the city of Sabaudia (LT) was founded in the early 1930s during the Fascist Era. Its Rationalist buildings are arrayed around porticoed squares, the setting for town life, including: Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and 46m high Torre Civica, Casa del Combattente (Veterans Association), dopolavoro (working mens’ club) with bar and theatre, the covered market and the Post Office. The post office, faced with thousands of mosaic tiles in blue (the colour of the House of Savoy) has windows edged in red Siena marble and a main staircase leading to the guardian’s house with a tree in the centre. On a square to one side are the Church of the Santissima Annunziata with its 47m high bell tower and the Royal Chapel, Casa Canonica and internal courtyard, and baptistery.
The surrounding municipal area features a coastline of sandy dunes, wooded areas (once part of the Terracina forest) and a range of wetlands and almost swampy areas protected by three coastal lakes: Lake Sabaudia (or Paola), Lake dei Monaci, Lake Caprolace. A large part of the municipal area has formed the National Park of Circeo since 1934.
