Located on a promontory about 455m above sea level, the territory of the town of Altomonte (province of Cosenza) is both flat and hilly.
The part on high features the Norman Castle (12th century) which has retained its original layout and is now a hotel. The Church of Our Lady of Consolation in piazza Tommaso Campanella is the prime example of Gothic-Angevin architecture in Calabria and is attached to a Dominican Convent which today hosts the civic museum, a 15th century cloister and Palazzo Pancaro, a noble residence dating to the 16th century.
Close by, the Azzinari Museum is housed in the torre dei Pallotta, a 11th century fortress on a square layout.
Piazza San Francesco holds a church of the same name and a monastic complex, with a 18th century Dominican cloister which is today the Town Hall.
Not far outside Altomonte, the Riserva del Farneto, ancient hunting area of the Sanseverino family, has a fishing lake.
