The Tor Caldara Regional Nature Reserve, in the territory of Anzio (RM), occupies a mostly flat area that ends on a 15m high cliff over the sea with the Torre Caldara, built in the 1500s as a lookout for Saracens, on its peak.
The territory, filled with fossil dunes and Mediterranean undergrowth inhabited by bee-eaters and rabbits, has numerous small sulphur springs. In some areas, the springs settle into small ponds where it is possible to observe the bubbling of the sulphur gas which permeates the air with its characteristic smell of rotten eggs.
