Overlooking the Itria Valley in an area known as the Murgia dei Trulli, Cisternino is located 46km from Brindisi, near the Adriatic coast and considered one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Towns. The Torre di Porta Grande, also known as the Norman-Swabian tower and topped by a statue of San Nicola, is the main gate to the historical town. The centre contains many historical residences, including the Palazzo del Governatore, a beautiful example of Baroque architecture in Apulia, the 16th century Bishop’s Palace, the Palazzo Amati, Palazzo Lagravinese and Palazzo Ricci-Capece with its Torre del Vento. A little further on is the Capuchin Monastery with the Church of St. Anthony, the Church of San Quirico, and the 16th century Chiesa Matrice dedicated to St. Nicholas of Patara and built in the 14th century over the ruins of a Paleo-Christian church.
