Specchia is a tiny hilltop town in Capo di Leuca, 54km from Lecce. Considered one of the most exciting emerging rural destinations and known as a jewel of the Southern Salento, it was awarded the prestigious Orange Flag by the Touring Club of Italy and is one of Italy’s Most Beautiful Towns.
Time stands still in Specchia. Days pass slowly in the shade of its bell towers while the architectural harmony of its charming courtyard houses and elegant noble mansions has remained unaltered. Specchia has managed to make the most of its treasures, paying great attention to its architectural and industrial archaeology, restoring ancient underground oil presses and other historical buildings, and transforming the ancient hamlet into an albergo diffuso (decentralized hotel with rooms spread over several sites), one of the first in Italy.
The Castle of Risolo forms the heart of the town, with the Chiesa Matrice and the former Monastery of the Black Franciscan Friars. The surrounding countryside contains many ancient dry stone buildings known as pajare, masserie (farmsteads), a small Byzantine church dedicated to St. Euphemia and the atmospheric village of Cardigliano. This small rural settlement was built during the Fascist period and has now been transformed into a tourist structure.
