A breath-taking view, overlooking the Tremiti Islands as far as the Croatian coast, is the business card of Ischitella, located on the Gargano promontory, 300m above sea level, in an area crisscrossed with watercourses. Terra Vecchia is the old heart of the town, with its evocative medieval setting, terraced houses typical of the area and narrow alleyways which reach down to the city walls. In contrast, the Rione Ponte is characterized predominantly by elegant, neoclassic 18th-century architecture. The entrance gates to the historical centre and the 17th-century castle are all that remains of the ancient fortress of Ischitella, while the most important religious places are the Church of St. Eustace and the Convent with the cypress of San Francesco, a famous upside-down tree which, according to legend, grew out of a stick planted by a friar.
