The complex of brick buildings of Trajan’s Market was built at the same time as his Forum in the early 2nd century C.E. Articulated over several levels, it occupied and supported excavation of the slopes of the Quirinal hill and was used for administrative activities linked to the Forum. The buildings were restructured on numerous occasions from the Roman era to the great work of archaeological discovery, restoration and integration that lasted from 1926 to 1934.
The lower part, on the forum level, includes the three-storey great hemicycle with a hall at each end and the littlethree-storey hemicycle. The lower and upper parts are separated by via Biberatica, a basalt paved street with the central building at its peak which stands at street level and for three levels above. To the north, the street turns and ends beneath the present day via Quattro Novembre, flanked by the complex of the great hall; to the south, the street links to the present-day salita del Grillo. Behind the large hall and the central building is a second basalt paved route, via della Torre, and an area that is now garden features several Roman structures where the torre delle Milizie was built in the 13th century.
Inaugurated in 2007, the Imperial Forum Museum occupies the buildings of the great hall and central building and includes the great hemicycle with the section of Trajan’s Forum.
