Of Roman origin, Minturno (LT) is located at the centre of the gulf of Gaeta and occupies a territory that includes the hilly area of Minturno and the coastline of the hamlets of Scauri and Marina di Minturno. Crossed by the via Appia, the town extends from the promontory of Monte d'Oro to river Garigliano, the natural border between Lazio and Campania.
Monuments in Minturno include: the Baronial castle which hosted St. Thomas Aquinas, Isabella Colonna and Giulia Gonzaga; the Churches of St. Peter, St. Francis and the Annunciation; the hanging bridge over the Garigliano with iron chain moorings (the first of its kind in Italy); the polygonal walls and the ruins of the villa belonging to the Roman consul Marco Emilio Scauro.
The archaeological area of the ancient Roman city of Minturnae includes the castrum, its square grid the starting point for the development of the residential settlement, some of whose polygonal walls are still preserved. Symbol of the area is the majestic Roman theatre which was completely restored during the reign of Augustus with cavea, stage and orchestra, still used today for events and festivals.
