Tarquinia (VT), known as Corneto in the Middle Ages, was formed after the depopulation of the Etruscan cities of Tarquinia and Gravisca following the Barbarian invasions and the fall of the Roman Empire. Open to many cultural influences, the city experimented with bold architectural plans in the year 1,000 (approx.) that resulted in a series of medieval alleyways, arches, towers and palaces preserved intact today. Its historical centre holds buildings of extraordinary artistic interest including Palazzo Vitelleschi, seat of the Museo Nazionale, and the Church of Santa Maria in Castello. However, the unique characteristic of the city panorama is the ubiquitous presence of towers: crumbling or intact, they rise alike in squares and fields or are incorporated into the residences of powerful families such as the six in Palazzo dei Priori, a massive urban fortification.
