Latina was founded in the 1930s during the Fascist era and given the name of Littoria. At the heart of the town is piazza del Popolo where the town hall is located as is the civic tower with wall clock, the fountain della palla and surrounding gardens. From here, straight lines extend out to outline areas with geometric precision. Palazzo della Prefettura (formerly Palazzo del Governo) is located in piazza della Libertà. In piazza San Marco, the Casa del Combattente (House of the Fighter) and the Opera nazionale Balilla (Fascist Youth organisation) are two examples of the architecture of the time. The Cathedral of St. Mark stands in the same square. Nearby, the bizarre Palazzo M was built in the shape of an enormous M to honour Mussolini. In via Umberto I, the palazzo della cultura houses the civic theatre whose foyer features work by Cagli, Greco and Cambellotti, and the Civic Gallery of Modern Art which documents Italian art between the two world wars.
