Atina in the valley of Comino (province of Frosinone) is divided into three areas: the historical centre, built on the ruins of the ancient Roman city; the Colle, characterised by huge polygonal walls; and Atina Inferiore, built after WWII near the bridge on the river Melfa.
According to legend, the town was founded by Saturn who, forced to flee from Greece, hid in Lazio where he originated a fabulous “Golden Age”. The powerful polygonal city wall surrounding the town is important historical heritage dating to the 4th century BCE, approximately 6 km in length.
The entrance of Atina leads to piazza Garibaldi which features the majestic porta dell’Arco, a large fountain and the Convent of St. Francis, built in 1630, which includes a cloister and church. The historical centre comprises small squares, 18th century palaces and monumental arches and is dominated by the Palace of the Dukes of Cantelmo that towers from the highest point and today houses the Town Hall. The lower part of the town, more easily accessed, is its centre of commerce and finance.
