The Parco regionale di Gianola e Monte di Scauri (Regional Park of Gianola and Mount Scauri) is a protected nature reserve of 309 hectares situated in Southern Lazio on the strip of coast that separates the Aurunci mountain range from the gulf of Gaeta. The protected area is mostly hilly reliefs which reach no higher than 40m above sea level and rising over them, mount Scauri which is 123m high.
The natural environment, its vegetation predominately Mediterranean maquis, has links with Roman and medieval history with the ruins of villa del cavaliere Mamurra, an octagonal nymphaeum known as the temple of Janus, an ingenious system of water tanks, fountains and cisterns, with stairs descending to the sea and the so-called cave of the Janara (or the witch). Watchtowers were built in the 16th century, including those of Scauri, Fico, Gianola and torre Foce. The tower of Scauri rises on a cliff with a sheer drop into the sea facing the settlement of Scauri: it is about 14m high and lacking the upper part and the access stairway.
The park also protects a marine area of 5 hectares along part of the shoreline. In this part of the sea, fishing and mechanical sailing are forbidden.
