Lake Loppio, located between the Bondone and Baldo mountains in southern Trentino, is a protected area that has become a protected wetland. Initially a natural lake, it was transformed by manmade intervention in 1958 when the Adige-Garda tunnel was built beneath the lake, causing the underlying water table to drop.
The lake, now a marshland ecosystem, looks different in every season and is rich in plants, amphibians, reptiles and birds. It is also a site of historical and archaeological interest.
